SINOPSE | EXCERTO
Britain’s recorded history starts no more than two thousand years ago, but it is probable that the land was inhabited as much as a hundred thousand years or more before that. So recorded history – recorded, that is, by contemporany writers – covers only a tiny fraction of the whole story of the country. The first real historian of Britain was Julius Caesar, who, in the monograph describing his conduct of the Gallic War mentioned a couple of raids carried out on Britain from his Gaulish bases and gave a good deal of information about the peoples living in Britain and their customs.
